CNN HEROE OF THE YEAR

I gave place the article about clean water problems in Africa.  It is not valid only for Africa, but also for all of the world.  US has the same problem.   The following news is about a man, Chad Pregracke, who has dedicated his life to cleaning Missisipi River and other U.S. waterways.  For his effort, he was chosen as CNN hero of the year 2013.  Here are the details about the news from http://www.cnn.com/2013/11/19/world/hero-of-the-year/  :

"Pregracke, 38, grew up in East Moline, Illinois, where the Mississippi River was in his backyard. As a teenager, he worked as a commercial shell diver and began to notice the heaps of debris in the fabled waterway, which supplies drinking water to 18 million people in more than 50 U.S. cities."

"I saw thousands of barrels, thousands of tires, cars, trucks and tops of school buses. ... I got sick of seeing it and just wanted to do something about it," said Pregracke, whom some have called "the rivers' garbageman."
For nine months out of the year, Pregracke lives on a barge with members of his 12-person crew. They go around the country with a fleet of boats, and they try to make cleanup fun for the volunteers who show up in each city.

They use skits, music and mock motivational speeches to get the volunteers amped up, and sometimes they even do a little karaoke. Teams also compete to see who can find the "best" garbage.
Close to 90% of what they recover is recycled; Pregracke said the rest gets disposed of properly.
In addition to the river cleanup, Pregracke has launched a floating classroom barge where his staff educates high school students and teachers about the damages of pollution on river ecosystems. In 2007, his nonprofit implemented a program to plant 1 million trees along river shorelines to protect and restore the natural environment. The group is halfway to its goal.

CLEAN WATER FILTRATION: BASIC NECESSITY

Interesting article again in Environmental News Network about clean water issues especially in Africa.  Because, we know that one of the biggest problems in most of the African countries is finding a pure and clear water.

"Clean water is a vital concern as many parts of the world struggle with its availability. Kenya is a prime example of a country on the edge. Kenya's people have long struggled with lack of availability of fresh water creating hazardous health conditions. According to the World Bank, the country's population is well over 43 million people. The country is one of the poorest on the earth with one of the most arid climates. Only a small portion of the land is suitable for agriculture.  Further, Natural resources available to Kenya do not support adequate or equitable delivery of water forcing people to spend many hours of each day, procuring water for basic sustenance."

"For those lucky and strong enough to get water, the rate of exposure to pathogens are a massive problem due to the contamination of basins and pumps where water is collected.
Water issues in Ghana are similar where the population pushes 25 million.  Only 13% of Ghana’s dense population has access to adequate sanitation facilities.  Eighty percent of all of the diseases in Ghana are caused by unsafe water and poor sanitation.
Moving westward the people of Honduras are also in the throws of a water crisis. An existing humanitarian crisis was exacerbated by Hurricane Mitch, in 1998 which devastated the country leaving 75% of it without safe drinking water. Because of the nation’s poverty, rebuilding continues to be slow forcing residents to depend upon contaminated water sources.
In response to the crisis, NativeEnergy of Burlington, VT has teamed up with National Geographic and REVERB, an environmentally driven music organization, to bring clean water to these people. The three part consortium has been responsible for the installation of more than 2,300 water filters in homes, rural watering holes and urban canals.
Added climatic benefits are that the need to burn firewood to boil water for sanitation is eliminated further reducing greenhouse gases.
NativeEnergy is the provider of carbon offsets which help finance projects like this, National Geographic's participation provides educational, research and adventure trips that foster interest in the plight of countries like Kenya, Ghana and Honduras and REVERB is a musical community that engages musicians and their fans in environmental concerns globally.
Recipients of the water filters report a decrease in waterborne illnesses and the ability to apply money previously used to purchase firewood to education related expenses and entrepreneurial activities."

WHAT IS THE TRUE COST OF FOOD PRODUCTION?

Interesting article in Environmental News Network about why do we need sustainable food:

"We must account for the real costs of food, or sustainable food systems will never break through to the mainstream.
We live in a time when the need for sustainable food and farming systems has never been more urgent. Earlier this year, over 200 leading scientists signed a consensus statement on Maintaining Humanity's Life Support Systems in the 21st Century. It expressed deep concern that society has reached the tipping points for a range of environmental and social consequences to our behaviour, which could significantly degrade life on earth by 2050.

Our current industrialised agriculture is at the very heart of these impacts. Increasing demand for food due to population growth, plus changing patterns of consumption as we eat more meat and heavily processed foods, means our systems of farming and food production are coming under increasing pressure.
Yields of conventionally produced food are falling. Soil the world over is being degraded ten times faster than nature can restore it. Widespread damage is being done to the earth's ecosystems through the use of chemical pesticides and nitrogen based fertilizers. Farming is making an immense contribution to greenhouse gas emissions.
In short we are fast approaching a sustainability cross-roads. The long-term viability of our current globalised food system is being seriously called into question."

WAYS TO MAKE THE ENVIRONMENT MORE CLEAN

There are several ways to keep the environment clean.  It is easy and can be done by everyone easily in the daily life.
First, it is important to do recycling.  Recycling the waste product is really crucial to keep the environment clean.
Second,  we should all try to decrease any kind of pollution.  Because, it destroys the environment and ecosystem.
Third, it is important to reduce carbon footprints by making eco friendly small changes in your home appliances.
Fourth,  chemicals are the biggest threat to the environment.  So, as much as possible,we should all reduce chemical usage.

5 WAYS TO MAKE YOUR HOME MORE SUSTAINABLE

As you know, we do really care sustainability issue.  Our one of the goals is to make our communities  more sustainable.  Therefore, I like to read interesting articles about sustainability and found one which I want to share with you.  It is about the ways how to make your home more sustainable.

*Landscaping
The most basic thing you can do to make your yard more sustainable is to start a compost pile. All you need to get started is some brown and green. So take your dead leaves and yard trimmings and start layering. Over time, add vegetable scraps, coffee grounds and egg shells and turn it occasionally to add air. Eventually you will have beautiful, rich soil that's perfect for planting a vegetable garden -- another thing you can do to create a more sustainable home. Kick it up a notch and add edible plants to your landscape. While you're at it, lose the grass and xeriscape your yard with drought-tolerant plant varieties. Less watering equals greater sustainability. You can also plant deciduous shade trees around your home to help with air conditioning bills. When they lose their leaves in the winter, they'll let in more light.

*Reuse and recycling
Baggies, paper and plastic bags, envelopes and file folders are all items that are easy to store for reuse and usually have a much longer life cycle than most people actually take advantage of. Printer paper has two sides, so save a stack to use for printing drafts and archival documents. Grocery items often come in a type of plastic that many cities don't recycle. Rather than tossing these containers in the trash, they can be used to store any number of household items.

*Reduce
Recycling and reusing are great practices, but reducing your impact to begin with is the best practice. Avoid buying paper plates and cups and choose compact flourescents over regular incandescent light bulbs because they last longer and use less energy. Fixing leaky pipes can save thousands of gallons of water, while weather stripping windows can save energy and reduce your heating and cooling bill. Installing low-flow toilets and showerheads is an investment that will save you money over time and will start saving water immediately.

*Make Wise Consumer Choices
Your choices as a consumer greatly affect the sustainability of your home. Using rechargable batteries limits the waste of items that often can't be recycled. Buying paper products made with recycled content continues the chain of sustainability.  Biodegradable trash bags and cups are made of corn that dissolves over time, adding one less type of plastic to our landfills. And energy saver appliances, such as front-loading washers and dryers and efficient dishwashers save you money.

* Use nontoxic cleaners
There are many natural cleaners on the market these days, some of which still have synthetic fragrances that end up in our water supply. Fortunately, you can make great, environmentally safe cleaners out of household items. The acid in white vinegar makes it naturally capable of killing mold and bacteria; you can use it to clean mirrors and windows. Baking soda is also great for deodorizing. Lemon juice is another bacteria battler and sodium borate, aka borax, is a multi-purpose cleaner that's useful for scrubbing walls and floors.

    GLOBAL CARBON EMISSIONS

In one of my last blogs, I mentioned about the greenhouse gas emisssions and primary sources of it in US.  In NBC news, there is an article about global carbon emissions with a title "Surprise?  Global carbon emissions set new record in 2013."

"Global emissions of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide are on course to rise yet again in 2013, reaching a new high of nearly 40 billion tons, according to figures released Monday by researchers who track emissions around the globe.
The projected 2.1 percent rise over 2012 figures "is not a surprise at all,"Roisin Moriarty, a research scientist with the Global Carbon Project at the University of East Anglia's Tyndall Center for Climate Research, told NBC News in an email. In fact, "it is a little lower than the value we predicted last year — 2.6 percent."

    NEWS ABOUT ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES

Internship in GreenSavings makes me to be more interested on environmental issues.  I like to search the news and interesting articles about nature online. Today there was a news about an active volcano that was found under Antarctic Ice in Huffington Post:

"Earthquakes deep below West Antarctica reveal an active volcano hidden beneath the massive ice sheet, researchers said today (Nov. 17) in a study published in the journal Nature Geoscience.
The discovery finally confirms long-held suspicions of volcanic activity concealed by the vast West Antarctic Ice Sheet. Several volcanoes poke up along the Antarctic coast and its offshore islands, such as Mount Erebus, but this is the first time anyone has caught magma in action far from the coast.
The volcano was a lucky find. The research project, called POLENET, was intended to reveal the structure of Earth's mantle, the layer beneath the crust. In 2010, a team led by scientists from Washington University in St. Louis spent weeks slogging across the snow, pulling sleds laden with earthquake-monitoring equipment."

    GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS

United States Environmental  Protection Agency published a piece about greenhouse gases overview.  It defines the greenhouse gas emissions as gases that trap heat in the atmosphere. These gases are carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, fluorinated gases.  The primary sources of greenhouse gas emissions in the United States are:

Electricity production (33% of 2011 greenhouse gas emissions) - Electricity production generates the largest share of greenhouse gas emissions. Over 70% of our electricity comes from burning fossil fuels, mostly coal and natural gas.

Transportation (28% of 2011 greenhouse gas emissions) - Greenhouse gas emissions from transportation primarily come from burning fossil fuel for our cars, trucks, ships, trains, and planes.
Industry (20% of 2011 greenhouse gas emissions) - Greenhouse gas emissions from industry primarily come from burning fossil fuels for energy as well as greenhouse gas emissions from certain chemical reactions necessary to produce goods from raw materials.

Commercial and Residential (11% of 2011 greenhouse gas emissions) - Greenhouse gas emissions from businesses and homes arise primarily from fossil fuels burned for heat, the use of certain products that contain greenhouse gases, and the handling of waste.

Agriculture (8% of 2011 greenhouse gas emissions) - Greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture come from livestock such as cows, agricultural soils, and rice production.

Land Use and Forestry (offset of 14% of 2011 greenhouse gas emissions) - Land areas can act as a sink (absorbing CO2 from the atmosphere) or a source of greenhouse gas emissions. In the United States, since 1990, managed forests and other lands have absorbed more CO2 from the atmosphere than they emit.

WAYS TO KEEP THE ENVIRONMENT CLEAN

I like to visit other blogs which are about environmental issues.  I found a nice piece about some ways to keep the environment clean.  Here are some tips:

        * The 3Rs are considered to be the most important and easiest way to keep our environment clean and refrain it from pollution. Reduce, recycle and reuse are the famous 3 Rs that can keep our environment clean. By reducing the usage of harmful materials, and recycling items such as paper and glass and at the same time reusing goods that can be reused will reduce the pollution levels in the air and keep the environment clean.
        * Planting more trees increase the oxygen level in the atmosphere. This way there is an increase in the total oxygen level thus resulting in cleaner air to breathe and keeping environment clean.
        * Many people tend to litter. This is a bad habit as littering causes a rapid increase in pollution levels. Instead of throwing garbage on the roads, there should be recycling bins on every corner of the road so that people do not litter. This will help in keeping the environment clean.
        * Cigarettes are another harmful item that increases the air pollution as well as the well known health benefits.
        * By using eco friendly and biodegradable cleaning items the environment will be a better and cleaner place for humans to live in and by the continuous use of these products the environment will improve for future generation.

    SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Sustainability is one of the key issues of the environment.  It is not important only for today but also for the future generations.  Sustainable development is the trigger of this issue and I believe that it is really crucial.  I think it might be good to share with you the information about sustainable development from the source of International Institute for Sustainable Development.

Sustainable development has been defined in many ways, but the most frequently quoted definition is from
"Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. It contains within it two key concepts:
    • the concept of needs, in particular the essential needs of the world's poor, to which overriding priority should be given; and
    • the idea of limitations imposed by the state of technology and social organization on the environment's ability to meet present and future needs."

When you think of the world as a system over space, you grow to understand that air pollution from North America affects air quality in Asia, and that pesticides sprayed in Argentina could harm fish stocks off the coast of Australia.
And when you think of the world as a system over time, you start to realize that the decisions our grandparents made about how to farm the land continue to affect agricultural practice today; and the economic policies we endorse today will have an impact on urban poverty when our children are adults.

You can visit http://www.iisd.org to get more information about sustainable development

UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND REDUCED CARBON EMISSIONS 15 PERCENT IN 2012

In The University of Maryland's Indepent Student Newspaper, there was a good news about UMD in terms of green and sustainable life.  In the sustainability office’s 2013 progress report released Thursday, the university reported a 2012 carbon footprint of 278,722 metric tons, a 10,803-ton drop from 2011 levels. Despite continuing sustainability challenges such as air travel and steam production, the office attributed its success to new initiatives such as commuter parking permits, the sustainability minor and campuswide recycling.

The reduction signifies meeting the university’s first Climate Action Plan goal, a “very significant” achievement, said Andrew Muir, the sustainability office’s spokesman. The university’s Climate Action Plan, launched in 2009, set regular targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and eventually achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

Students and the rest of the university played a large role in helping meet the plan’s first goal, said Mark Stewart, the office’s senior project manager. For instance, the 76 percent recycling rate in 2012 exceeded its 75 percent target, and the sustainability minor launched that year is now the university’s most popular. More students have been biking to school, and students purchased 478 fewer parking permits, Stewart said.

    BENEFITS OF RECYCLING

Recycling is a crucial issue in terms of green and sustainable environment.  While I was searching some articles about recycling, in US Environmental Protection Agency site, I found out the list of benefits of recycling.  Here are the benefits:

    • Reduces the amount of waste sent to landfills and incinerators;
    • Conserves natural resources such as timber, water, and minerals;
    • Prevents pollution by reducing the need to collect new raw materials;
    • Saves energy;
    • Reduces greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global climate change;
    • Helps sustain the environment for future generations;
    • Helps create new well-paying jobs in the recycling and manufacturing industries in the United States.

    UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND VISIT

Yesterday, we went to UMD to continue making our surveys for facultees and departments in the school for this time.  The results are a bit different than the students' survey.  Mostly, they pay their own electrical bill different than the students.  Because, students generally stay in the dorms and the electrical bill is included in the rent.  But, people who pay their own electrical bill in the faculty or departments are eager to switch to wind energy if it would reduce their costs.  The second important fact is that people in the departments use bicycle less than the students.  So, they are not interested in having discounts from bike shops.  The third important fact is that people in faculty use dry cleaner services more than students.  Therefore, getting discounts from dry cleaners is a thing that they favor much.  These surveys give us clue about which areas students and faculty members spend money mostly and from these facts, we could focus on finding new supply members from these areas.

HOW TO CHECK WHETHER IT IS ORGANIC OR NOT?

Continue with the issue of organic foods, there are some important points in Mayo Clinic about it.  The main issue for the consumers is to check whether a food is organic or not.  So, how could we check that?  The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has established an organic certification program that requires all organic foods to meet strict government standards. These standards regulate how such foods are grown, handled and processed.  If a food bears a USDA Organic label, it means it's produced and processed according to the USDA standards. The seal is voluntary, but many organic producers use it.  Products that contain at least 70 percent organic ingredients may say "made with organic ingredients" on the label, but may not use the seal. Foods containing less than 70 percent organic ingredients can't use the seal or the word "organic" on their product labels. They can include the organic items in their ingredient list, however.
By the way, in this article, it is denoted that organic and natural do not have the same meaning.  Only foods that are grown and processed according to USDA organic standards can be labeled organic.

    ORGANIC FOODS !

There is an ongoing debate about organic food and farming whether it is healthy or not.  While I was searching about it, I found an informative article at http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/organic-food/NU00255  The article focuses on the differences between organic and conventional farming so that people could understand why it is adviced to consume organic products.  Here is a comparison between two different types of farming.

    ConventionalOrganic
Apply chemical fertilizers to promote plant growth.Apply natural fertilizers, such as manure or compost, to feed soil and plants.
Spray synthetic insecticides to reduce pests and disease.Spray pesticides from natural sources; use beneficial insects and birds, mating disruption or traps to reduce pests and disease.
Use synthetic herbicides to manage weeds.Use environmentally-generated plant-killing compounds; rotate crops, till, hand weed or mulch to manage weeds.

    UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND VISIT

We went to UMD again last week and for this time, we made some surveys among the students, faculty and some academicians.  Our aim was to find out on which goods and services they mostly spend money and their consumption especially about transportation and electric.  So that, we could find and search related supply members to become member of GreenSavings according to the preferences of the students and other university members.  I made a survey for the first time in my life and I have to say that it is not that easy to find someone and convince him/her to answer the questions.  The most common excuse for escaping the questions was 'I don't have time'.  I can understand them, because I also don't like answering these survey questions.  For my part, I have talked with 15 students and 3 faculty members.  I have found out that they mostly spend money on transportation and food.  They mostly do not pay their electrical bill because most of them stay in dorms.  I have learned the places that they go mostly for eating around the university and it is important for us to know these restaurants or cafes to negotiate with them for becoming a supply member.  But, generally it was fun I think and different experience for all of us!

    WHAT İS SUSTAİNABİLİTY?

As it is our main issue in GreenSavings, we hear the word 'sustainability' really much.    Since it is an abstract concept, we might not get understand it fully.  According to the definition of United States  Environmental Protection Agency, it is based on a simple principle. Everything that we need for our survival and well being depends, either directly or indirectly, on our natural environment.   İt is important to making sure that we have and will continue to have, the materials and resources to protect human health and our environment.  So, the main issue in sustainability is not to risk the potential resources in the future that people would meet their needs.  So, in order to call something sustainable, we should look at whether it ables to continue forever or not.  Therefore, protecting the environment is really crucial for sustainability.  Recycling, consuming green products and services, clean and protected environment and usnig alternative energy resources are one of the ways to contribute to a more sustainable community.  So, we should all care about that!

    WİNTER GREEN TİPS

As you know, winter is coming. So, it is good to give some green tips for the winter.
İn http://www.earthshare.org/2008/09/button-up-your.html , there are some inexpensive solutions for the winter that should be considered.

*Cover your air conditioner: Keep cold air from entering your home through the space around the air conditioner.
*Upgrade your thermostat: Controlling the temperature in your home at different times of the day without you being home.
*İnstall heat reflectors: Reflecting heat away from the wall and into the room and maximizing  each radiators energy efficency.
*Caulk it: Small spaces and gaps around windows and pipes entering the home create energy wasting drafts.  So, good to caulk.
*Reflective window film: The plastic sheets are placed on the inside of window pannes and glass doors.  The film reflects inside heat back into your home, reducing the amoung that is conducted outside through windows.
*Weatherstripping: Creating a tight seal around all your windows to reduce heated and cooled air from escaping outside.

          GO GREEN!

We hear "go green" slogan most of the time.  But, do we know what it actually means?  İt is a wide concept that can be said much about it.  But, basically going green helps you to save more by giving less damage to the environment, which is good to live in a more sustainable community and good for future.  So, how can we "go green"?  Here are some simple tips that can be used in our lives.

*Recycling is really important.  İt decreases the waste and helps the product cycle.
          *İnstalling compact fluorescent light bulbs.
*Unplugging appliances when they are not used.
*Preferring organic food also for your health.
          *Using long-lasting products.
          *Using alternative energy resources.
*Conducting an energy audit would be useful.
          *Using smart dishwashers.

Do not forget, small steps could make a big difference!

          UNİVERSİTY OF MARYLAND VİSİT

As you know, GreenSavings Coop. has a partnership with University of Maryland and works closer especially with the Department of Sustainability.  So, we went there to talk about what both sides can do and work on. There were also 2 people from Electric Advisors and Footprint Free to discuss about their sides and how they can encourage people in the University to use their services. For our sides, we had prepared some questions before going there.  Also, we had prepared some flyers to hang around the school to highlight the advantages, which are basically the discounts, to encourage them to use the green products.  But, people in Department of Sustainability told us that flyers were not a good idea.  They said that they tried it several times before, but it was not attracting people.  Anyways, we will be testing our flyers in UMD to see whether it works or not.  Second idea is to make an event or panel as we call, on December to make people more eager to buy green products.  People who used and benefited from green products and discounts will be giving a speech about the advantages of it.  İt is an alternative way to make people inform about this partnership and encourage them.  Besides the talk with Office of Sustainability, we also went to some potential supply members to talk about the benefits if they join GSC. We got some contact information to inform more about what GSC does, how the system works and the benefits for themselves to increase their businesses.  So, it was a good experience for all of us and had a good day.

          ENVİRONMENTAL POLLUTİONS(NOİSE, THERMAL, VİSUAL, WATER)

          Noise pollution:
          • Airplanes, helicopters and motor vehicles
          • Construction or demolition noise
          Thermal pollution:
          • Warmer lake water from nearby manufacturing (using cool water to cool the plant and then pump it back into the lake)
          • Included in thermal pollution should also be the increase in temperatures in areas with lots of concrete or vehicles, generally in cities
          Visual pollution:
          • Skyscrapers might block the view of a mountain
          • Graffiti or carving on trees, rocks or other natural landscape
          Water pollution:
          • Raw sewage running into lake or streams
          • Industrial waste spills contaminating groundwater
          • Radiation spills or nuclear accidents                                  http://www.sustainablebabysteps.com/kinds-of-environmental-pollution.html

          ENVİRONMENTAL POLLUTİONS(AİR, LAND, LİGHT)

İ have found an interesting article about kinds of environmental pollution in http://www.sustainablebabysteps.com/kinds-of-environmental-pollution.html  There are 7 kinds of environmental pollutions.  Three of them are,
          Air Pollution:

          • Exhuast fumes from vehicles
          • The burning of fossil fuels, such as coal, oil or gas
          • Harmful off-gasing from things such as paint, plastic production and so on
          Land Pollution:
          • Litter found on the side of the road
          • Illegal dumping in natural habitats
          • Oil spills that happen inland
          • The use of pesticides and other farming chemicals
          • Damage and debris caused from unsustainable mining and logging practices
          • Radiation spills or nuclear accidents
          Light Pollution:

          PARTNERSHİP WİTH UNİVERSİTY OF MARYLAND

As you know, GreenSavings Coop(GSC)have made a partnership with University of Maryland(UMD) and our main task for this term is to develop this partnership.  We will be visiting the Office of Sustainability(OS) in UMD and talk about our partnership and how both sides can benefit more out of it.  UMD has many students, employees and alumnis which is a big advantage and market for also our Supply Members.  So, we will be visiting the potential Supply Members around UMD for joining GSC.  For this visit, we have ben preparing for about two weeks.  We have discussed about the questions that we will adress to them and prepared flyers to hang around the campus about how the membership would benefit the students and employees in terms of getting discounts from Supply Members.  İ think this partnership is good opportunity for GSC to increase its members and Supply Members; for UMD members to get discounts and for Supply Members to reach more customers and new markets.

          SOLAR ENERGY

Solar energy is one of the most popular alternative energy sources and i think it is the most known  and used one in our daily lives.  İt is the conversion of sunlight into usable energy, either for producing electricity or transportation, cooking and water heating.  Solar energy is growing at 25% per year, which means that it has been used more and more, year by year.

          To list the advantages;
*Like in wind power, the source, which is sun, is renewable and free.
          *No pollution.
          * Solar systems do not require maintenance during their lifespan and their lifespan is quite long like 30 years.
          * İt doesn't make any noise while working.
          * Solar power technology is growing, which means that it is getting better and better in terms of efficiency and cost.

Of course, there are some disadvantages of solar energy.

*The initial cost is high. Cost includes the purchasing and installing the solar panels.
          * Location is really crucial. For the cloudy and foggy places, more panels are required.
*İt is useless in the nights.

          WİND ENERGY

İn the last post, i have mentioned about geothermal energy.  To continue with other alternative energy resources, wind energy is next.  So, what is wind energy?  İt is basically providing electrical energy from wind energy by wind turbines and windmills.  İn the past, Babylonians and Chinese were using wind energy to pump water for irrigation purposes and also for sailing. However, as we look at the current situation, only 2.5 % of total electric usage is provided by wind energy, which is really low. İt is known that, almost half of the electricity that is used in US is provided by burning coal, which has  a bad effect on environment; ground, air and water.  So, it is really crucial to use alternative energies like wind energy to live in a healthier world for today and for future.

          As we list the benefits of wind power;
          * Wind is a renewable energy resource and it is free.
*İt does not create greenhouse gases emissions and pollution compared with fossil fuels
*The land where the wind turbine is built, still could be used for other purposes like agriculture

We could also mention about its disadvantages.
*Since it depends on wind, in some parts of year, there could be no wind and can't be used.
*The strength of the wind is variable.
          *İt is a bit noisy
          *İt could kill birds.

China, United States and Germany have the highest windpower total capacity in the world.  The best places for wind energy production are coastal areas, top of rounded hills and open plains.

          GEOTHERMAL ENERGY

İ believe that using alternative resources is really crucial both for today and for future.  Geothermal energy is one of them.  So what does geothermal mean?  The term comes from two Greek words, "geo" which means earth and "thermal" means hot.  So, the energy is gained by the heat from the world.   At the core of the world, temperatures may reach 5000 C.  Heat from the centre of the earth cause some rocks underground melt and becomes molten as we call it magma.  The magma heats rock and water in the crust.
The Earth's geothermal resources are more than adequate to supply the energy needs of people. Also, it is renewable.  Because any heat extraction is small when you compare with the Earth's content.

What are the advantages of geothermal energy?
*They have low running cost because it does not need any fuel to generate power.  So, dependency on fossil fuels decrease.
          * İt does not create any pollution
          *İt provides constant power
*İt can either be used for producing electricity or for heating purposes.

-Use a heavy-duty, clear plastic sheet on a frame or tape clear plastic film to the inside of your window frames to reduce drafts for cold weather
-İnstall white window shades, drapes or blinds to reflect heat away from the house for warm weather
-Keep your curtains and shades open to use daylighting instead of turning on lights.  Also, decorate with lighter colors that reflect daylight
-Don't keep your refrigerator or freezer too cold and make sure that your refrigerator door seals are airtight.
-Use a covered kettle or pan or electric kettle to boil water, its faster and uses less energy

          TİPS ON ENERGY SAVİNG

While İ was looking at the site of Department of Energy, İ found a useful guide to share, which is the Energy Savers Guide.  There are some good tips on saving money and energy at home.
-Clean warm air registers, baseboard heaters, and radiators as needed, make sure they are not blocked by furniture, carpeting or drapes.
-Clean or replace filters on furnaces and air conditioners once a month
-Air leaks can waste a lot of energy dollars.  One of the quickest energy saving task is caulk, seal and weather stript all seams, cracks and openings to the outside
-Set your programmable thermostat as low as is comfortable in the winter and as high as is comfortable in the summer,as well as you are sleeping or away from home.
-İf you heat your home with electricity and live in a moderate climate, consider an energy efficient heat pump system to reduce your energy consumption.
-Repair leaky faucets promptly, a leaky faucet wasted gallons of water in a short period of time.

          WORLD ENVİRONMENT DAY

İ want to highlight an important day, which takes place every June 5. İt is the World Environment Day(WED) which is run by the United Nations Environment Program(UNEP). The purpose of this day is to take attention to the environmental issues, especially the political attention and raise global awareness of the clean environment.  İt was established by United Nations General Assembly in 1972 to mark the opening of Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment.  On that day, United Nations Conference on the Human Environment begins, so the date is not coincidentally chosen.
There are many activities take place on that day.  Parades, tree planting, clean up events and campaigns and concerts.  The theme of 2013 was Think, Eat and Save.  They want to take attention to the enormous food wastages all around the world, which creates a big obstacle for the ecologic inbalance.  As İ looked at the previous themes, there were also some interesting and important ones, such as melting ice, which refers to the global warmings issue; desertification, and a slogan" When People Put the Environment First, Development will Last".  İ think, it is really good to see that some people do really care the environment and put some effort to highlight this issue wiith these activities.

İnternship diaries: What We Have Done So Far?

As a relatively quick start to our internships, the first thing that we have done is to compose and send the offer letters to our potential supply members.  İn our letter, we have highlighted three issues.  First, tell them about what GreenSavings actually do. Second, how the partnership would make gains for them and the third thing is the partnership between Maryland University.  By mail merging, it is easier to modify the template according to the adresses and is useful for time saving.  After we wrote the adresses of these supply members on the envelops and put the letters in it, our work has completed.  İt is a good experience for all of us to take action in it. The second thing that we do is to discuss among ourselves about which supply members are most beneficial and efficient for 5 categories.  Students, alumni, faculty, department and employees.  Kristina, Min and me; Janbek have agreed on 4 supply members, which are good and useful for all of them.  The second task was eye opening for us to discuss the advantages and disadvantages and take a quick search about the supply members.  We got an idea about what they actually do and learn about their businesses.  The third task we have been working on is how to use social media more effectively for GreenSavings.  The effects of social media is undeniable in today's world.  So, it is good to use social media for GreenSavings more efficiently.  We have focused on twitter, facebook and blog.  Each of us has been working on one of them and it is fun by the way.  That's it for now, and everything has been going well.
